I started drawing early this morning – still in lockdown and wanting to let my creativity flow. Superb Girl is curvy, she’s fierce and she’s fine. I don’t think we ever see enough indigenous gals in the media as the super heros they truly are 🦸🏿‍♀️

I have always struggled with my body, my weight, my self image. I hated male attention and got it unwelcome when I was younger. Puberty was shit as it started early and I couldn’t cope. My breasts were huge and I didn’t seem to fit the mold. I discovered pin ups and rockabilly music at 14. I saw Jayne Mansfield in ‘The Girl Can’t Help it’ and fell in love with her. She was ridiculously camp, clever and had incredible physical proportions which she played upon. It was the first woman I’d seen that reasonated with me at that young age. I started designing posters featuring cartoon pin ups for rockabilly bands in Sydney at 15. It was a great way to get into clubs!

When I was drawing ‘Girl Power’ yesterday I heard hubby on the phone. Telling the older male listener he’d hung the washing up. Silence then, ‘Well she was doing other chores I so did it.’ The assumption was (from the other person on the phone) that it was my responsibility. We need to stop doing this. Seriously. It’s HOUSEwork. Not FEMALEwork.

I’ve absolutely loved drawing pin up girls again. I’ve refreshed them into REAL girls with curves. I’d like to further explore drawing gals that we don’t see enough representation in the media. Us women need to stick together. Stand tall, stand proud. Look out for one another. Smash the patriarchy!
