Margaret Catchpole vintage convict book
Margaret Catchpole vintage convict book
Australians in history series - collectable
When Margaret Catchpole was transported to NSW in 1801 she was no longer the young, tempestuous firebrand who had twice in her youth come to grips with the law through her impulsive and headstrong escapades.
Soon after her arrival in the convict ship Nile, Margaret was assigned to Captain Palmer as cook and laundress. She stayed in his household at Woolloomooloo for two years but on being granted her ticket-of-leave she took up farming near Richmond Hill. Although still technically a convict Margaret devoted her life to helping the families of the early settlers who farmed the fertile Hawkesbury Plain west of Sydney.
In spite of her lack of education, she was a prolific letter-writer and it was these letters to her family in England, with their vivid descriptions of life in the infant colony, which formed the inspiration for this warm and delightful story.
