Bushland Magic is the third book of Australian designs for embroidery that my husband Keith and I have published. This book has given me even greater satisfaction than the other two as in addition to designing the embroideries I have achieved the challenge of bringing it together ready for printing. I hope my love of Australian wildflowers and wildlife which gave me the inspiration to complete this book will encourage more people to embroider our beautiful Australian bushland. The charted designs in this book are very easy to follow for any form of counted thread embroidery. The 'magic; begins for me with a trip into the bush, my particular love being for the smaller herbaceous native plants, orchids, fungi and all life found among the leaf litter and debris of the forest floor. Before painting a specimen I carefully draw the plant and any interesting growth or litter surrounding it. I have collected a good library of reference books to help me identify and draw each plant as botanically accurate as possible. A painting may take days or sometimes weeks to complete, so I prefer to paint in the shelter of my studio. To create embroidery from my painting I first transfer the painting onto a grid using coloured pencils to match my chosen thread colours. I usually need to embroider a subject two or three times before I achieve the colour combinations I require. I have become very good at unpicking! When the embroidery is completed the colours are then translated into black and white symbols and charted again.
