Our park at Mount Victoria has a past. As well as a Flintstones-style fountain and a pond with a bridge, It also once housed a little zoo with grottos. These were built by unemployed men in the 1930s. There was a man that led a pony around, a fox and an eagle, native birds too. A log style cabin was built later that housed snakes. The style of the grottos in the park are something you see throughout the Blue Mountains as well as Taronga Zoo in Sydney. The animals would (probably) have been miserable in such small enclosures.
Today, in 2024 the park is getting a bit of a face lift. It's got new signage, new paths winding around the grottos. The grottos themselves have murals of some of the animals once housed there. Sometimes, not getting rid of things we didn't do right is a good thing - to remind us not to do it again. Kids now run around throughout them, we have a tennis court, bandstand and play equipment.
I've included a Black Cockatoo and an Eastern Grey Kangaroo. The roos are everywhere in Mt Vic and the kids at our local school learn that this is the totem for this place.
It's a great park. It's right on the highway, making it easy to grab a coffee and cake then head over. I know I'm biased about Mount Victoria but I'd love you to explore it too.
